Creating a new, portable wastewater solution that can be installed anywhere
February 7, 2014 — Usually the challenge in developing a wastewater treatment system design is, “what formulation and resulting system design is the best to achieve the required discharge parameters.” However, in the case of this chicken processing plant in Toronto, finding the treatment solution was the easy part — finding a place to install it proved to be the challenge. Preliminary jar testing provided a starting point for the development of the treatment system.
In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the design and to provide the client with real world results, the JNE Environmental’s pilot DAF plant was put to the test once again. Within a week of receiving the purchase order for the installation and operation of the pilot plant, it was at the client’s facility. The pilot plant was designed to provide a small scale water treatment plant that can be operated almost anywhere.
It is completely self contained and requires only a portable generator for power. Inside the pilot plant are equalization tanks, three reaction tanks for the evaluation of different treatment formulations, as well as the smallest of the JNE Environmental DAF units, “the FS-5.”
The pilot plant comes fully assembled with two operators and all of the treatment chemicals required for one week of operation. The plant can process up to five gallons per minute, allowing JNE Environmental to try different formulations in a real world application of a scaled down version of the final treatment system.
Within a day the formulation was finalized and the total phosphorous content, as well as TSS were reduced below the city limits. The client was very impressed with the quality of the water discharged to the sewer and a purchase order was issued for a complete system featuring an FS-30 DAF unit, along with JNE Environmental JNE 709, 281 and 3003 phosphate scavengers, coagulant and flocculent.
During the design phase it became apparent that an addition to the building would have to be built to house the new wastewater treatment plant. Numerous options were considered, but all were ruled out by the client due to access, permit or constructability issues. The best solution would be if the new plant could be installed in an enclosed portable structure that could be placed anywhere on the property. This is exactly the kind of flexibility, creativity and solution that JNE Environmental prides itself on developing. The JNE Environmental Containerized Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWWTP), featuring a full size JNE Environmental FS-30 DAF unit, was born.
The CWWTP has custom plug flow reactors for each of the JNE Environmental products required to treat the wastewater. The complete wastewater treatment plant is installed in a former refrigerated shipping container to provide an insulated structure with access doors, roll up doors, heating and ventilation. This container is fully pre-piped and wired with a JNE Environmental controller and can be installed anywhere.
The client has to connect the wastewater supply, the clean water return, sludge storage and electrical power, and then the plant is ready to process up to 50 gpm depending on incoming wastewater conditions. JNE Environmental is very proud to have demonstrated our flexibility and commitment to assisting our customers with their wastewater treatment needs in such an innovative way.
JNE Environmental looks forward to shipping CWWTPs anywhere and everywhere there is a need for portable wastewater treatment systems. Potential applications include: remote drilling locations, mining wastewater treatment, land reclamation projects, run-off water treatment, fish farming, and many more.
