Oil Removal Package Optimizes Stamping Plant’s Existing Wastewater Treatment System
Efficient oil removal from wastewater is difficult — the experts at JNE Environmental make it easier.
May 1, 2017 — A local stamping and manufacturing plant approached JNE Environmental to supplement their existing wastewater treatment system. The existing system was very maintenance intensive due to the high oil content in the wastewater. To reduce the load on the existing system, we custom-designed an oil removal package by combining multiple oil recovery methods.
Our oil removal package uses a combination of mechanical filtration via the sump pit cover to remove debris; a clarifying tank with an oil skimmer; and finally, a custom-designed and fabricated stainless steel oil coalescer to remove finer oil particles. By combining these three oil removal techniques properly, enough oil is removed for the existing system to treat the wastewater.
JNE’s design also addresses an ergonomic concern with the existing system: previously, workers were having difficulty dumping the heavy, cumbersome mop buckets into the sump pit. To prevent the risk of injury, our design includes a lever-operated, custom-designed and fabricated mop bucket dumper. Workers are now able to wheel in the mop buckets and push the articulated lever to safely and easily dump the oil and wastewater into the sump pit cover.
To monitor and control the wastewater treatment system, JNE Environmental turned to our partner, JNE Automation, to supply a programmable logic controller (PLC) with an expandable human machine interface (HMI). The PLC receives signals from level sensors in the sump pit, clarifying tank, and waste oil tank. The system then automatically determines whether to open actuated valves or run a diaphragm pump to keep levels within targets. In addition to controlling the treatment system, the HMI is sized to handle additional process automations to be implemented in the future.
