JNE Consulting was invited to a photo commemoration of an Algoma EAF milestone event that included Ontario Premier Ford, Minister Pirie, Mayor Shoemaker, and Mr. Ross Romano, MPP for Sault Ste Marie.
The Algoma EAF project reached a major milestone in February with the erection of the first sections of structural columns for the new melt shop building. The melt shop building will be over 1,000 feet long by 130 feet wide with a peak height of about 165 feet. Structural fabrication of the building is by Walters Group Inc. based in Hamilton, Ontario. This was a challenging design for the team as the building includes a crane runway for two 570-ton capacity cranes at approximately 100’ elevation.
JNE Consulting has worked closely with Algoma and Walters over one year of detailing to refine the design to simplify the erection of this structure and maximize shop and field preassembly. In addition to the melt shop buildings, Walters’ scope also includes the fabrication and erection of a 600’ long scrap bay aisle adjacent to the melt shop aisle and extension to two bays of the existing melt shop buildings for a total of about 1,400 tons of steel. One of the interesting challenges for this project was the design of 100’ long crane runway girders to support these massive cranes at the furnaces.
Members of the JNE Consulting team were invited to a photo event commemorating a milestone for the Algoma Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) project.
JNE Consulting project team members were invited to a photo commemoration of the event that included Ontario Premier Ford, Minister Pirie, Mayor Shoemaker and Mr. Ross Romano, MPP for Sault Ste Marie as well as team members from the Algoma construction and executive team and Walters erection team. Despite the cool weather, there was a lot of energy and excitement at the event. No sooner was the official commemorative picture taken than Walters swung back into action with the erection of the next piece of steel allowing for some action shots with the group.
