The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity is available for an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer, Industrial HVAC & Building Systems in our Hamilton office.
The successful candidate will join JNE’s Building Mechanical team, supporting industrial projects primarily within the steel, mining, and heavy industrial sectors. The role will primarily involve the design of HVAC, ventilation, plumbing, natural gas, and other building mechanical systems for new and existing industrial facilities.
The successful candidate will also support piping engineering projects and tasks based on project requirements and team workload. This provides an opportunity to develop broader industrial mechanical engineering experience while maintaining a primary focus on HVAC and building mechanical systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform engineering and design of industrial HVAC and building mechanical systems, including ventilation, heating, cooling, plumbing, drainage, and natural gas systems.
- Perform heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, duct sizing, pressure drop calculations, hydronic calculations, and plumbing and natural gas system calculations.
- Develop HVAC and building mechanical system concepts, equipment arrangements, ductwork layouts, piping layouts, schematics, and design criteria.
- Size and select HVAC and building mechanical equipment, including air handling equipment, fans, heating and cooling equipment, pumps, heat exchangers, plumbing equipment, and associated components.
- Prepare and review equipment schedules, specifications, datasheets, calculations, technical reports, and other engineering documentation.
- Apply applicable codes and standards, including the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, ASHRAE standards, SMACNA standards, NFPA standards, and CSA B149.1.
- Coordinate mechanical systems with structural, electrical, process, piping, and other engineering disciplines.
- Work closely with mechanical designers to develop coordinated 2D and 3D design packages using Revit and AutoCAD.
- Review drawings and models for technical accuracy, constructability, interdisciplinary coordination, and compliance with the project design basis.
- Perform site investigations, field measurements, and assessments of existing industrial facilities and mechanical systems.
- Develop practical designs for brownfield industrial facilities, considering existing conditions, constructability, equipment access, installation constraints, and integration with operating facilities.
- Provide construction support, respond to technical questions, review vendor information, and participate in general reviews and field inspections.
- Identify design issues, incomplete information, and technical risks, and work with senior engineers and project teams to develop practical solutions.
- Support the development of project scopes, engineering estimates, schedules, and design deliverable requirements.
- Monitor assigned work against project scope, budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and checking of work completed by designers and junior engineers, as appropriate to experience.
- Act as Engineer of Record for smaller projects and defined mechanical scopes, where appropriate based on experience and competency.
- Support the specification and coordination of fire protection systems and equipment. Detailed fire protection system design experience is considered an asset.
- Support piping engineering projects and tasks based on project requirements and team workload.
- Perform piping system engineering calculations, including hydraulic analysis, pressure drop calculations, equipment sizing, and system evaluation.
- Develop and review piping system design criteria, equipment and piping layouts, P&IDs, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Apply applicable piping codes and standards, including ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3, when completing piping engineering work.
- Support field investigations, existing system assessments, equipment tie-ins, and brownfield piping modifications.
