Galvanizing Line
Construction Engineering
Completely new galvanizing line installation
In 2010, JNE Consulting was awarded an engineering contract detailing the construction and engineering services for the installation of a new galvanizing line. The heavy gauge line was to be installed in the empty building that previously housed a pickle line. At the same time, JNE was also awarded a contract detailing the same construction and engineering services for another project — the conversion of an already existing No.4 Galvanizing Line to produce Galvalume product. Both the new No. 6 and No. 4 lines were to be engineered concurrently.
JNE’s scope of work first included the removal of redundant services and equipment and an upgrade to the building’s existing lighting and ventilation systems. The pickle line foundations were demolished or reworked, and the new process equipment foundations were then designed and installed.
A portion of the roof had to be removed to accommodate a 245 ft APC Tower which included an equipment handling crane, an elevator coupled with machine room, HVAC, equipment mono-rails and tower ventilation.
JNE’s piping services were utilized to run the new utilities line from the various existing supply locations and to run equipment piping from the distribution header to the service connection points on all equipment. Equipment control and power wiring were distributed from the control rooms to the process and ancillary equipment. The JNE team also designed the heating and ventilation of the APC Tower, the zinc pot basement ventilation and the HVAC for the electrical control room.
The engineering scope for this project was budgeted at upwards of 50,000 man hours. A concurrent 30,000 man hours were budgeted for the upgrade of the No. 4 Line. The new No. 6 galvanizing line is intended to produce 700,000 tons of galvanized steel per year. Engineering work commenced in November of 2010 and was completed mid-2012.
